Thiruvananthapuram is an ancient city with
trading traditions dating back to 1000 BC. It is believed that
the ships of King Solomon landed in a port called Ophir (now
Poovar) in Thiruvananthapuram in 1036 BC. The city was the
trading post of spices, sandalwood and ivory. Sri Anizham
Thrirunal Marthanda Varma (1729-1758 AD) can be aptly called
the architect of modern Thiruvananthapuram. He ruled from his
palace in Thackalay, now geographically located in Tamil Nadu.
He dedicated the land to their patron deity Sri
Padmanabhaswamy and the kings called themselves
Padmanabhadasas. Marthanda Varmas successor Rama Varma
shifted the capital from Padmanabhapuram to Thiruvananthapuram
In 1795. Slowly Travancore united with Kuttanad and Kochi and
later with Malabar to become Kerala in 1965, the capital of
which is Thiruvananthapuram. |
